The world's most philosophical sitcom is back, as The Good Place returns for its third season.

Here's everything you need to know about season 3, including when it starts, what it's about, and how to catch up on seasons one and two.

When is The Good Place on?

Season 3 is airing now, and you can watch each week on NBC in the US on Thursdays at 8/7c, with each episode arriving on UK Netflix the next day, Friday.

Watch the trailers

NBC hasn't put together a traditional trailer for season 3, but there is one worth watching: this 'first look' video, which combines a few cast interview snippets with clips from season 3 and a handy recap of the first two series:

Who's in the cast?

Don't worry: just about everyone you love from The Good Place is coming back this year. Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, Jameela Jamil, William Jackson Harper, Manny Jacinto and D'Arcy Carden are all returning for another year, which is a relief – The Good Place wouldn't really be The Good Place without them.

We've also seen more from Marc Evan Jackson back as Michael's boss Shawn, along with Maya Rudolph as The Judge and Adam Scott's demon Trevor. We also hope we'll get returns from Maribeth Monroe (Mindy St Claire) and Jason Mantzoukas (Derek).

Finally, we have two confirmed new faces. First up is Mike O'Malley, who's appeared as The Doorman, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Simone, a fellow academic at the same university as Chidi.

How many episodes are there?

Just as with the first two seasons, there will be 13 episodes this year. That's counting the season premiere as two episodes, so expect the whole show to run over 12 weeks unless there are any breaks.

What is season 3 about?

Here's what we know so far about season three (with spoilers for seasons one and two naturally!).

After Michael persuaded the judge to give the four humans another chance to become good people in the finale to season two, we're now going to see that play out on Earth.

That means Michael will travel to Earth to visit each of the four and save them from their variously embarrassing deaths, thus giving them the chance to try to be good while he and Janet observe.

Naturally, things will get more complicated from there, likely in two main ways: first up we're pretty sure Michael won't be able to leave well enough alone and will probably keep interfering on Earth to give them a few extra pushes towards 'good' – even though he in turn really isn't supposed to.

Beyond that, we're expecting to see a bit of a butterfly effect going on, with saving their lives having unexpected ripples across the rest of this new timeline, changing the world in some unexpected ways.

Creator Mike Schur has been very up-front about this season's premise for a change, saying that they really are definitely on Earth and it isn't a trick – leaving us pretty confident he has some other trick up his sleeve for the end of the season, but right now your guess is as good as ours.

How to watch the first two seasons

The easiest place to watch old episodes of the show is on Netflix – both of the first two seasons are available on both UK and US Netflix right now.

If you're not a Netflix subscriber you can sign up for a free trial to binge-watch them, you can download/stream episodes of the show from iTunes or Amazon, or pick up the first two seasons on DVD/Blu-ray if you prefer.
